College Expands Flexible HE for Workers with New HN Flex Courses

Coleg Cambria has unveiled a new range of flexible higher education courses as it continues to reshape further and higher education through the expansion of its innovative HN Flex model.

Designed for learners balancing study with work and personal commitments, the HN Flex approach offers an accessible, bitesize way to gain higher-level qualifications without the constraints of traditional study patterns.

Following the launch of the HNC Flex in Business at Northop earlier this year, Cambria University Centre is now introducing a wider programme of Higher National unit delivery, giving learners increased choice in how, when and where they study.

Developed in partnership with Pearson, the HN Flex model enables students to study selected units at their own pace while benefiting from expert tutor support. The qualifications carry the same academic standing and employer recognition as traditional Higher Nationals, while offering the flexibility modern learners require.

“HN Flex is a trailblazing step for further and higher education in Wales,” said Emma Hurst, Dean of Access and Higher Education at Cambria University Centre.

“We know that life doesn’t pause for education, and our learners shouldn’t have to choose between personal responsibilities and professional development.

“HN Flex empowers people to study when and where it works for them – with high-quality teaching, recognised qualifications, and real career progression opportunities.”

Among the new courses launching in 2026 are HN Flex – Cyber Security Level 4; HN Flex – Innovation and Digital Transformation Level 4; HN Flex – Professional Practice in the Digital Economy; and HN Flex – Programming Level 4. Programmes in Construction and Hospitality Management will also be introduced in the new year.

The expanded offering builds on the success of the initial HN Flex in Business course, which allowed learners to complete stackable, bitesize units that contribute towards a full qualification. The new courses extend this flexible model into digital and technology-focused disciplines.

Learners will be able to retrain, upskill or take their first step into higher education while fitting study around work and family life, supported by Cambria’s experienced staff across its campuses in Wrexham, Deeside and Northop.

Funding support is available for eligible learners through regional Employer Skills programmes.
