As the nights draw in and temperatures drop, homeowners are being urged not to splash out on expensive new furniture or redecorate their entire homes to achieve the perfect autumnal look.
Instead, a few simple and affordable changes can transform a home into a warmer, cosier and more inviting space — with interior expert Kate Conrad from Madison and Mayfair saying this autumn is all about styling rather than spending.
One of the biggest trends for Autumn 2026 is “burrowcore”: a move away from perfectly styled, minimalist interiors towards spaces that feel lived-in, personal and comfortable.
Kate said: “Autumn is the perfect time to make your home feel warmer and more inviting, but you absolutely don’t need to spend a fortune to achieve it..
“Some of this season’s biggest trends can be recreated with a few small changes and a little creativity. It’s about making your home somewhere you genuinely want to spend time, rather than somewhere that simply looks good in a photograph.”
Kate’s five affordable ways to embrace the autumnal look are:
- Embrace burrowcore
Forget perfection. This season is about creating a home that feels lived-in and welcoming, rather than overly styled.
Introduce second-hand furniture, worn wooden pieces, framed photographs, books and personal possessions to give rooms character. A vintage side table or pre-loved chair can often make a space feel more interesting than an expensive new piece.
“Burrowcore is about comfort and a feeling of belonging,” says Conrad. “Your home should tell your story, and that doesn’t have to cost a lot of money.”
- Introduce earthy colours
Rich, nature-inspired shades including terracotta, cinnamon, olive green and mocha are perfect for creating a warmer autumnal feel.
But there’s no need to reach for the paintbrush. Cushions, throws, rugs and curtains can introduce colour without the cost and commitment of redecorating.
- Layer up textures
One of the easiest ways to make a room feel cosier is to introduce different textures.
Combine velvet, bouclé, wool and chunky knits through cushions and throws. You can even refresh existing soft furnishings with inexpensive fabric or look for bargains through online marketplaces and second-hand sellers.
“The trick is not to make everything match,” says Conrad. “You want contrast — something smooth alongside something chunky and tactile.”
- Make lighting part of the décor
As darkness arrives earlier, lighting becomes increasingly important — both practically and aesthetically.
Rather than investing in expensive designer lamps, move existing lamps around the home or add an inexpensive table or floor lamp to a darker corner.
Warm-toned bulbs, candles and fairy lights can also create a softer atmosphere. Switching off the main overhead light and using several smaller sources of light can instantly make a room feel more relaxed.
- Give your bedroom a boutique-hotel feel
The bedroom is becoming an increasingly important retreat, with layered bedding, warm neutrals and soft lighting creating a boutique-hotel feel.
You don’t need to replace your bed. Add a chunky throw across the bottom, layer cushions behind your pillows and introduce simple neutral bedding. A warm bedside lamp can make an immediate difference.
“The great thing about this autumn’s trends is that they’re incredibly achievable,” adds Conrad. “You don’t need a huge budget or a complete makeover. A few thoughtful changes can completely transform how your home looks and, more importantly, how it feels.”
