A COLEG CAMBRIA learner is ready to turn up the heat in one of the world’s most prestigious cooking contests.
Sion Hughes will compete in the Senior Chef category at the Global Chefs Challenge in Singapore later this month.
Sion, from Wrexham, is currently studying for a Work-based Level 3 Professional Cookery qualification with the college in addition to his role as Spa Head Chef at Carden Park, based near Chester.
The contest takes place over four days from October 22 at the Expo Centre, where he will line-up against 15 of the best chefs on the planet.
In preparation, Sion – the only representative from the UK – has been working alongside award-winning executive chef, Graham Tinsley, himself a seasoned competitor with experience in five Culinary Olympics and five Culinary World Cups.
Anwen Regan, a Catering and Hospitality Practitioner at Cambria, wished Sion well in the competition.
“Sion is a credit to himself and the college, he is hugely talented and his abilities already surpass the requirements of the course, demonstrating his passion for continual growth in his craft,” she said.
“This opportunity is a huge milestone in his career, showcasing not only his skill but his potential to make a lasting impact in the culinary world – we wish him the very best of luck.”
Sion secured his place in the finals by excelling at the European regional heats in Italy last year.
In Singapore, he will be tasked with creating a four-course menu, each dish showcasing his creativity and skill.
A spokesperson for Carden Park said: “We are incredibly proud of Sion and wish him the very best as he embarks on this exciting journey to Singapore.”
Sion added: “We have worked tirelessly to try and present the best menu possible, and with Singapore just around the corner, the excitement is really starting to build!
“I’m truly honoured to be able to represent my country on the world stage and hope to bring home a great result.”
