As a country known for its love of gift-giving across different occasions, be it birthdays, weddings, graduations, or something in between, it’s evident that many of us hold sentimental value in the act of giving and receiving gifts. But, what makes these particular moments so memorable? To dive deeper into this, TK Maxx surveyed over 2,000 individuals across the UK, all aged 16 and above, to capture their insights and find out more.
The results of the survey unveiled a striking finding: nearly half of Brits link a significant life event to a gift they’ve received, underlining the profound role that gift-giving plays in shaping our cherished memories and feelings of being valued. This connection was even more pronounced among women, with 50% of them associating special moments with gifts, compared to 40% of men.
Gifting also holds a special place throughout the country, with the highest associations between special occasions and specific gifts found in Northern Ireland (62%), Greater London (56%), and Scotland (50%). Among different age groups, individuals aged 25-34 displayed the strongest connection between gifts and memorable events, with a huge 65% making this association. Not far behind, the 16-24-year-olds followed closely with 59% forming a link between an event and a specific gift they received.
Despite the occasion, gift-giving is a cherished tradition in our nation. When asked to pick the most important events, respondents highlighted birthdays (67%), Christmas (61%), and weddings (32%).
The survey also identified generational variations in gifting attitudes. While 42% of respondents believe that older generations emphasise the importance of traditional or tangible gifts, 30% think that younger generations prioritise experiences over physical presents.
To follow this, a significant portion of those surveyed consider themselves avid gift-givers, frequently showering their family and friends with presents. In fact, 53% of respondents fall into the category of occasional gift-givers, proving that the joy of giving and sharing love is not confined to just special occasions – it’s a recurring, and sometimes even frequent.
