Retiring to the coast is often a long held dream, but when it comes to finding somewhere to live seaside resorts can be expensive as they are popular places to live. Northern coastal towns however can offer better value for both buyers and renters.
The seaside town of Scarborough has just been revealed as the best place to retire by Hunters Estate Agents[i] due its affordability, two sweeping bays, 12th century castle and close proximity to the North York Moors.
The average house price in the area is almost £100,000 lower than the national average, but with many older people opting to rent in retirement, this is cheaper too according to retirement brand, My Future Living who has one-bedroom retirement apartments to rent from £675 per calendar month.

Jean Wray, 77-years-old decided to rent in a retirement community by the sea and moved with her husband from North London to Seaford in East Sussex for a quieter way of life and to be close to the sea. She sadly lost her husband to Covid in 2021, but says that renting in retirement is the best decision they ever made.
Jean says, “It was a great decision to move and now every day I enjoy stress-free living. Outside the development is a bus stop which means I can easily get into Brighton and Eastbourne.
“We used to own a lovely house but maintaining it was getting harder. We also wanted to free up some money to help our son with a deposit for his own place. I now have a worry-free life and if something needs fixing, it’s sorted quickly with no stress. I highly recommend renting in retirement. It’s a fantastic way of life. What’s not to love?”
My Future Living currently has a one-bedroom apartment in Homecrest House in Scarborough for £695 per calendar month. It’s walking distance to amenities and the seafront and comprises just 44 apartments across four floors.
