Retiring to the coast is often a long held dream, but when it comes to finding somewhere to live seaside resorts can be expensive as they are popular places to live. Northern coastal towns however can offer better value for both buyers and renters.
The seaside town of Scarborough has just been revealed as the best place to retire by Hunters Estate Agents[i] due its affordability, two sweeping bays, 12th century castle and close proximity to the North York Moors.
The average house price in the area is almost £100,000 lower than the national average, but with many older people opting to rent in retirement, this is cheaper too according to retirement brand, My Future Living who has one-bedroom retirement apartments to rent from £675 per calendar month.
Dominic Stead, Property Director at My Future Living said: “Renting in a retirement community can be an affordable alternative to buying and is a great way to make living by the coast a reality. More retirees are seeing it can suit their lifestyle better in later life too.
“Benefits include having likeminded people living close by to socialise with and not having to worry about maintenance and upkeep. For people downsizing from an owned property it can also free up capital to spend or invest in retirement.
“We have retirement apartments in some lovely retirement communities on the northern coastline including Scarborough which offer good value for money. For retirees looking for somewhere vibrant to live with lots of amenities on their doorstep it’s hard to beat.”
Jean Wray, 77-years-old decided to rent in a retirement community by the sea and moved with her husband from North London to Seaford in East Sussex for a quieter way of life and to be close to the sea. She sadly lost her husband to Covid in 2021, but says that renting in retirement is the best decision they ever made.
Jean says, “It was a great decision to move and now every day I enjoy stress-free living. Homeshore House is the perfect place to live, not only because the surroundings and gardens are immaculate with trees dotted everywhere but I’ve got the downs on one side and the sea on the other. Outside the development is a bus stop which means I can easily get into Brighton and Eastbourne.
“We used to own a lovely house but maintaining it was getting harder. We also wanted to free up some money to help our son with a deposit for his own place. I now have a worry-free life and if something needs fixing, it’s sorted quickly with no stress. I highly recommend renting in retirement. It’s a fantastic way of life. What’s not to love?”
My Future Living currently has a one-bedroom apartment in Homecrest House in Scarborough for £695 per calendar month. It’s walking distance to amenities and the seafront and comprises just 44 apartments across four floors.
They also have a one-bedroom apartment in Chapel Court, south east of Scarborough in the small seaside town of Filey for £725 per calendar month. Filey is a lively community with plenty to do and see, with its own bus and rail links with the rest of North Yorkshire.
Alternatively, on the Lancashire coast is the popular seaside resort of Blackpool where My Future Living have a one-bedroom apartment in Priory Court close to the promenade, piers, tower, shops and theatre for £675 per calendar month.
Apartments are available on an assured ‘lifetime’ tenancy, which means people can stay as long as they wish, as long as they keep to the terms of their lease. All developments benefit from landscaped gardens, a communal lounge to socialise in plus a 24-hour emergency alarm system in each apartment and an onsite manager on duty.
My Future Living is running a spring prize draw to win a Robot vacuum cleaner, plus other kitchen goodies. All tenants that have valid tenancies that start between 1 March 2023 and 31 May 2023 will automatically be entered into the draw.
